Book Review – Many Miles to Go: A Modern Parable for Business by Brian Tracy

Most people dream of being successful in a company. Usually a first dream or major goal would be to get a car or finish college. Brian Tracy had a unique goal and initial dream. Their first dream and their first goal would be immediately shot down by most parents due to the dangers to themselves and their lives. His first big dream was to cross the Sahara desert. He documents this odyssey in his book, “Many Miles to Go: A Modern Parable for Business.”

The Sahara Desert is the largest desert in the world. It covers most of North Africa and is almost as large as crossing the continent from the United States. That is a great undertaking to cross it. Then, heat, sand, sandstorms, etc. are taken into account. You have a major business even for a seasoned traveler, let alone young adults who will be traveling on their own.

Unlike cooler and more temperate places like the United States, you cannot travel at noon across the Sahara desert. The heat is too intense. It’s over 120 degrees in the shade. You have to travel lightly but wisely, as you need to ration food and water to survive. Your travels with your friends are a great analogy to any business venture. First of all, in the Sahara the terrain is flat, so you need landmarks to know where you are going. There were barrels of oil that marked the mileage as they went. They would travel based on those barrels of oil. So it made the trip measurable, meaning they could calculate the number of barrels of oil to go each day (or every hour) to measure their progress. Being successful in business is similar to that. You should set goals, daily, monthly, and yearly, to measure your progress (or digression).

Throughout this perilous journey, nothing goes according to plan like it does in business. They had to maintain a positive mental attitude and be attentive to their goal, which is to reach the other side of the Sahara desert. By reaching his goal, he gave Brian Tracy tremendous confidence in future ventures, especially in business. Each trading company would be smaller compared to this crossing of the Sahara desert. Because he achieved this goal at a young age, he was able to achieve great success (and even failure) in business at a young age and move on.

This is an adventurous book about the dangers and triumphs that can occur in life, even in business.
