Good Eats at Birmingham Al Restaurants: Botegga, Silver Coin Indian Grill and Niki’s West

Birmingham, Alabama, is a banking and medical research center of the Southeast with more green space per person than any other city in the country. It is also home to countless great places to eat. This article will describe three of them: The Silver Coin Indian Grill, Niki’s West, and Bottega.

The Silver Coin Indian Grill is located at 3321 Lorna Rd. At lunchtime, they have a buffet that includes fruits and salads, main courses including tandoori chicken, rice, and desserts. As you enjoy your lunch, the servers bring you freshly baked naan. At dinner time, the menu includes South and North Indian dishes, along with some Indo-Chinese dishes. All seasonings are made in-house and servers help describe the dishes to those new to Indian cooking. Two highly recommended dishes are the chicken tikki masala with mango chutney and the shahi ghosh kurma, which is lamb in a cashew sauce.

Niki’s West, located at 233 Finley Ave W, has been around since 1957 and has been run by two generations of the Hontzas family. They have a cafeteria line and menu service, and are known for their delicious “steak and three” comfort food from the American South. Everyone from doctors to truckers enjoy Niki’s West. While the variety of options can be overwhelming, it’s a good place to bring out-of-town visitors for a true taste of Southern cooking. Niki’s West is a Birmingham institution, a great place to socialize and people watch.

Bottega Restaurant is located in the historic Bottega Favorita Building at 2240 Highland Ave. S. One of Birmingham’s best upscale restaurants, it opened in 1988 and has consistently received top reviews ever since. The food incorporates culinary traditions from Italy, North Africa and the Mediterranean countries. Game, veal, and shellfish are offered, and the Parmesan soufflé and three-cheese macaroni and cheese are two of its most celebrated dishes.

Birmingham has a great restaurant scene, where you can find any type of food you desire. The Silver Coin, Niki’s West and Bottega are just three examples of the wide variety of cuisine you can experience in Alabama’s largest city.
