Home decoration – Break the rules!

Choosing your home decor can be quite confusing at times. Whether it’s country, rustic or French, each style can be easily combined to create a look all your own! In years gone by, the theme of home decor used a certain style, but today almost any combination works.

When decorating your home, your goal should be to create a coordinated and balanced design that is visually pleasing and provides a welcoming and warm atmosphere for your visitors and guests.

Farmhouse décor typically includes a large amount of wood with a light colored stain. Cabinets and furniture are adorned with simple handles and knobs. The decoration can focus on a theme, such as sunflowers, cows or roosters. Using a mix of many accents is also very charming and effective. Often a large open country kitchen is found in a country style home.

Rustic home decor is another very popular option. Weathered wood, rich rustic colors, and cedar are some of the elements you’ll find in this style. Rough wood framed pictures, wildlife figures such as wolves, and shadow boxes containing fishing-themed items are popular in this style. Exposed wooden beams and hardwood floors are often found in rustic decor.

The French country decor has a warm and welcoming vibe that is also very welcoming. Some of the most used colors in this type of decoration are red, black and white. Large, open kitchens are also very common in French country decor. You will find that many houses in this style have stone floors or a stone fireplace, with beautiful multi-panel French doors that open onto a beautiful and relaxing terrace or patio.

In all these styles you will find large spaces and huge family kitchens. Quilts, barnyard and farmhouse accents, and hardwood floors accented with luscious country-style rugs are popular in all three styles. You can easily combine ideas and accents from each of these popular styles and create a unique and beautiful look for your home.

You don’t have to follow the rules! Choose pieces you love, mix and match themes from each style, and create a look for your home that your family and friends will love. Decorating your home is all about what you and your family love, not what magazines tell you is appropriate! Be different and daring, and do what is right for you.
