How to Properly Hit a Driver – The Basics of How to Hit a Driver Straight Up and Away

To be successful in golf, you must learn how to properly hit a driver. You will hear different golf teachers preach different ways to hit a driver. Ultimately, the results will determine whether or not the driver is being hit correctly. When learning how to hit a driver correctly, you should define a proper shot as one that goes pretty straight, landing on the fairway or not too far into the rough, and one that goes farther than you could hit with any other club.

To directly hit a conductor:

  1. You must be aligned in a straight line. Make sure your feet, knees, hips, and shoulders are aligned parallel to the left of the target line.
  2. The clubface must be square at impact. This is a complex achievement that is influenced by your grip, swing technique, swing speed, and the golf driver itself, especially the shaft.
  3. If your ball spins to the right, then the clubface is too open at impact. This is called slicing and it is the most common problem in golf.
  4. If the ball spins to the left, the clubface is too closed at impact. This is called hitching and it is also a common problem.
  5. In either case, you must learn to adjust your grip and swing technique to fix the problem.
  6. You have to hit the ball squarely. The center of the driver clubface is called the “sweet spot,” and that’s where you want to make contact with the ball.

To knock a driver away:

  1. You have to use your whole body, not just your arms. Learn to rotate your back and hips correctly and you will have effortless distance.
  2. The club should flex back on the downswing and spring forward at impact. You have to let the club do the job it is supposed to do. Learning to hit a driver correctly means learning how to use the golf driver correctly. It takes a lot of practice to get the timing right on the ‘snap’ of the golf club.
  3. You need to generate a lot of clubhead speed from the driver. Technique is important here, but you also need to swing hard enough to get the driver’s head moving fast.

There are many elements to consider when learning how to properly hit a driver. Having a basic understanding of the concepts involved will help you learn why certain techniques are important.
