The Disadvantages of Homeschooling

“Homeschooling: Look Before You Jump”

Thinking of homeschooling your children? While you may have focused on the advantages of this form of education, take a moment to think about the possible disadvantages of homeschooling. Consider the demands of homeschooling before you take the plunge.

Answer the following questions “yes” or “no” to see how ready you are to homeschool your children.

1.) I am available to stay home and spend many hours not only instructing my child, but also researching subjects, curricula, and assessments.

2.) I have effective teaching skills and I know how to guide my child through the learning process.

3.) I transmit precise thematic material.

4.) I understand my child’s academic needs and abilities.

5.) I can provide activities for my child to participate in that work on their socialization skills.

6.) I fully believe in homeschooling and I am responsible for my child’s education.

If you answered “yes” to all of these questions, then you have addressed the main disadvantages of homeschooling. These disadvantages vary in intensity depending on individual circumstances, but can be overcome through local support groups and educational resources.

Experience in each subject area and the art of teaching are among the biggest disadvantages of homeschooling. Certified public school teachers take various courses on teaching methods, strategies, and learning problems. Specific classes are also taken in content-heavy areas.

Additionally, they must pass the Praxis exam and meet state standards before they can teach in the public school system. As a homeschooled parent, you don’t need to take these rigorous courses and tests. Therefore, you must be honest with yourself and accurately assess your abilities.

Time is another factor. Although homeschooling hours are flexible, academic work must be done in one form or another. It is up to you as a parent to keep the learning train running and productive.

Lastly, you will need to deal with people who view homeschooling as a minor form of education. You should stick to your choice and feel confident that you are doing what is best for your child.
