This point may seem simple, but too many anglers overlook it, because boilies were not originally used for carp fishing, but rather dough or paste was used for bait. In fact, there was a time when most of the largest carp caught by the most famous pioneer fishermen caught their carp not in boilies but in paste. When you use a boilie base mix mixed with eggs in cold water, these baits easily last long enough in cold water with zero heating and these soluble baits often work instantly.
The best time to try any new bait is in the winter! If you just try any new batch of baits in a carp easy water, the instant feedback will tell you right away if you have a working bait or a real winner. You may be surprised to learn that easy fish do not respond to all carp baits in the same way. In fact, in my own homemade bait test using a commercial bait as a comparative control bait, I can catch up to 6 times more carp using very small batches of homemade test baits than the commercial off-the-shelf bait. This shows a huge difference in success using alternative bait paradigms and the real advantage is that a true winter winner will perform even better the rest of the year!
In winter and spring, one of the most effective ways to get bites is not to use boilies, but to create baits made from broken down boilies, mixed with flavors and liquid foods and enhancers such as Talin, liquid and powder palatants and salty substances. like Belachan powder. You will definitely be surprised to see the difference for yourself if you try this tactic and the power of it is that your bait will actually work from the center out, and not just from the surface like conventional sealed egg boilies! This method means you can blast your favorite pre-made boilie but make it much more functionally effective in cold, dense water!
This may seem like an odd trick, but it is so well proven in my own fishing in the harshest of cold conditions that I have to recommend this edge bait. Instead of using conventional stick mixes or crushed boilies in PVA tapes or solid bags, make your own homemade mix from completely alternative materials and dip them into pure flavors and liquid feeds. For example, I soak crushed hemp seeds in liquid Robin Red, and I soak worms in CC Moore Red Venom, and form their PVA bag or web mix from very loose materials like molasses flour, enzyme-treated liver, powdered CC Moore vanilla extract which is rich in oleoresins, salts and sugars, all of which are absolutely ideal for cold water conditions!
CC Moore’s Sweet Fruit Enhancer is a natural ester and essential oil based product that has been enhanced with sweeteners and appetite stimulants and I use it in all my baits along with other liquids. I used to make my own versions for years, especially for cold water conditions, and this is a prepared version that I have used with great success in the winter and indeed in the heat of summer as well. I use much higher levels in the winter than in the summer that are recommended.
Bait substances work by altering things like the concentration of hydrogen in the water, and carp are so sensitive to such differences in water that you must exploit this fact to make your baits much easier for carp to detect. A very effective method of doing this is as simple as increasing the flavor level of your bait. For example, mix butyric acid with Scopex flavor and double or triple the recommended levels for your winter and spring baits and use them at different depths in the water column, not just at the bottom! Try this type of approach in still water in winter using your standard precast bait as a control bait for comparison and you will see the difference in fish feedback, believe me!
I have always found that breaking the standard rules of recommended bait substances by using real fish feedback testing is exceptionally beneficial with new batches of homemade baits and custom prepared baits because carp break our rules all the time and you can surprise them! !
