What is the best size for a baby blanket?

Did you get a beautiful velvet crib-sized baby blanket at your shower? Did she try to wrap that little baby in the blanket, only to find that she was hugging a lot of blankets and a very small baby? Here are some tips to help you choose a good sized blanket for your baby’s age.

Typically, a crib blanket is approximately 36″ x 52″ and will cover a standard crib mattress. While this blanket is wonderful for covering a baby’s crib, it’s not nearly as wonderful as a cover for the baby. A crib blanket is too big to wrap around a newborn. And we all know that a swaddled baby is a happier and happier baby.

Many lightweight cotton blankets are around 30 square inches. They are inexpensive and can be found at almost any department store. While that size is ideal for placing under the baby on the changing table to prevent mishaps, it’s not ideal for swaddling a baby. newborn, it’s too small.

A baby blanket that is 34 to 36 inches long in both directions and made of a light to medium weight, hypoallergenic fabric, such as baby cotton or fleece, is probably the best choice. It’s big enough to swaddle a newborn and small enough for an older child to sleep in at night. An added bonus is that if the fabric is light enough, you can roll up the blanket and store it in a diaper bag without too much trouble.

If you’re looking for a gift for the next baby shower, or want to give your sister a keepsake for her new baby, consider a personalized baby blanket, approximately 34″ – 36″, made from a hypoallergenic light or medium weight fabric. If you want to find a baby blanket for an older baby or toddler, consider buying a larger crib-sized blanket. If you or someone you know is a new mom for the first time, a pack (or more) of cotton receiving blankets is always a great option.
